How Nick Marshall shaped a lasting legacy at Auburn

Nick Marshall, however, hurdled those obstacles with silent confidence and his duality on the field. Wins piled up and four thrilling fourth-quarter comebacks landed Auburn in the SEC Championship during his first season. He broke records, he won games and he turned heads inside and outside the locker room in only two seasons.

"As far as the legacy, statistically, he's one of the best to ever come through here," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

Marshall arrived as a junior college playing looking for a second chance and he'll leave the Plains in the conversation as one of the top quarterbacks in Auburn history.

Perhaps putting Marshall's impact in perspective is not that difficult, though an off-the-field fine for marijuana possession in the summer led to temporary disappointment and a first-half suspension in the season opener against Arkansas.(AP2 714 Fers)

Marshall's meaningful impact on the field is clear. It's also difficult to imagine Auburn reaching the BCS National Championship Game if Marshall landed somewhere other than Auburn in 2013.

"I would like to say we would, but at the end of the day we probably wouldn't," center Reese Dismukes said.

Marshall's unassuming presence can lull people into a false perspective. As flashy as he is on the field, he's rarely as electric off it. He rarely smiles or laughs, choosing an unperturbed demeanor over all other options.

My aim is to win back US PGA card: Arjun Atwal

He shifted base to Windermere, Florida, 10 years ago, but the pristine greens of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) lures Arjun Atwal back to his 'spiritual home' every winter. It's an annual pilgrimage the celebrated Indian pro unfailingly undertakes to keep in touch with his roots.

"When I am done with playing professional golf, you can count on me returning to the city, for this is my home," said Atwal, who will be the star attraction in the Rs 1.5 cr McLeod Russel Tour Championship, the final event in the PGTI calendar. On Wednesday, Atwal spoke to TOI on his life and times on the US PGA Tour, arguably the toughest circuit in the world of professional golf.

Excerpts:

Now that you will be playing the Asian Tour next year, are you planning to shift base? (SpeedBlade Fers)

Not as of now. I have not chalked up my schedule as yet, but I do plan to play the big events on the Asian Tour and shuttle back to the US to play five or six events there to try and win back my US PGA card. It will be a challenging year but I am up for it.

What has been the journey been like as a professional golfer?

I turned pro in 1995, so it's been 20 years now. There have been ups and downs, but it has been very fulfilling in more ways than one. When I moved to the US in 2004, I was a rookie and it took me a year to settle down. I would say 2005 was the best in my professional career. If I recall correctly, I made the cut in all the events I had entered, including the PGA Championships (one of the four Majors) and had four or five top-four finishes, which was very satisfying.
