How Nick Marshall shaped a lasting legacy at Auburn

Nick Marshall, however, hurdled those obstacles with silent confidence and his duality on the field. Wins piled up and four thrilling fourth-quarter comebacks landed Auburn in the SEC Championship during his first season. He broke records, he won games and he turned heads inside and outside the locker room in only two seasons.

"As far as the legacy, statistically, he's one of the best to ever come through here," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

Marshall arrived as a junior college playing looking for a second chance and he'll leave the Plains in the conversation as one of the top quarterbacks in Auburn history.

Perhaps putting Marshall's impact in perspective is not that difficult, though an off-the-field fine for marijuana possession in the summer led to temporary disappointment and a first-half suspension in the season opener against Arkansas.(AP2 714 Fers)

Marshall's meaningful impact on the field is clear. It's also difficult to imagine Auburn reaching the BCS National Championship Game if Marshall landed somewhere other than Auburn in 2013.

"I would like to say we would, but at the end of the day we probably wouldn't," center Reese Dismukes said.

Marshall's unassuming presence can lull people into a false perspective. As flashy as he is on the field, he's rarely as electric off it. He rarely smiles or laughs, choosing an unperturbed demeanor over all other options.
